Music Mug Portable

Man, nothing gets me up in the morning like my iPod and hot cup of joe. Hey, I’ll bet it would work twice as good if I combine the two…there! Oh man, I really need to get sober, fast.


Yes, that does sound stupid, but the photo to the left is not the product of a hangover, but an actual product. This is a designer’s bright idea of an iPod speaker “disguised” as a coffee mug.

The Music Mug works on any MP3 player, provided it has a headphone jack. All you need to do is plug the Music Mug’s cable into the MP3 Player, and let the music play. Just don’t try and pour coffee or some other hot beverage into your Music Mug. The Product Page clearly warns about that.

Is this Music Mug really meant to be some sort of subterfuge for your iPod? If so, then I recommend a smaller MP3 Player that won’t stick out the top, such as the Creative Zen Stone. That way, if your office allows coffee, but not MP3 players, you will finally be able to “beat the system”. Of course, your boss and other co-workers might wonder where the music is coming from. They’ll never suspect the innocent coffee mug!

UK mobile developers Coolgorilla have launched the London Travel Guide, a free travel guide specifically designed for iPods, iPhones and mobile phones.

The London Travel Guide packs over 400 pages of info, along with interactive features, onto your portable media player. The guide is designed to be regularly updated, so you can have the most up to date information about each attraction, including entrance fees, phone numbers and websites.

iPhone and mobile users can simply click on the phone number of the attraction to call them up, or use the website link to go directly through to the attraction’s site to find more information.

Coolgorilla designed the iPod version to be downloaded as a podcast via iTunes and the iPhone and mobile versions have both been optimised so visitors can access the information over the handset’s web browser.

“A recent road trip through California got me thinking about how we could improve on the traditional, paperback travel guide” said Roy Forsdick, Managing Director of Coolgorilla. “By using the content rich features available on iPods and mobiles we can help travelers get the most out of their visit to London. Also, since software isn’t exposed to the same reproduction costs as hardcopy publications, we can distribute the guides for free!”

Coolgorilla is already working on similar travel guides for a number of other cities including Paris, Barcelona, New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco, due to be released later this year.

The company plans to make money from the travel guides through advertising deals.

Airfoil 3.1 offers Apple TV support

Rogue Amoeba has released Airfoil 3.1, the latest version of its Airport Express streaming audio utility for Mac OS X. Airfoil allows users to send audio from any application to an Airport Express, and can also send audio to multiple Airport Express units simultaneously. New features in version 3.1 include support for the Apple TV’s new AirTunes feature, which allows Airfoil to stream audio to the set-top box, and support for Airfoil Speakers for Windows. The release also fixes a DVD playback issue with Mac OS X 10.5.2, and includes various other fixes and improvements. Airfoil 3.1 requires Mac OS X 10.4 or later and sells for $25; users of Airfoil 2 can upgrade for $10. In addition to the Mac version, Rogue Amoeba also offers Airfoil 2.5 for Windows; it sells for $25 as well.
